About The Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is a small dog breed varying in height between 28-33 cm (11-13 in) at withers; bitches: 23-30 cm (9-12 in) at withers. Weight varies usually between 10-13lbs (4.5-5.9 kg).

There are 2 varieties, the ‘Hairless’ and ‘Powderpuff’. Hairless Chinese Crested can vary in amount of hair that covers their body, from very little to great plumes or furnishings on their head, tails and feet. The Powderpuff carries a long veil of hair that is silky, soft to the touch. Hairless Chinese Crested colours include mahogany and blue. Powderpuff coats come in various colours including black, white and cream. Both types can be born in the same litter where a Hairless to Hairless, Hairless to Powderpuff mating occurs, but a Powderpuff to Powderpuff will produce Powderpuff varieties.

The Chinese Crested has a ‘Primitive’ mouth where their teeth are pointy and in the Hairless variety teeth can be missing. The Chinese Crested also has a ‘Hare Type’ foot with long toes and nails.

The Chinese Crested has a graceful, pony like gait and can appear ‘Deer Type’ (racy and fine boned) or ‘Cobby Type’ (heavier body and boned).

The Chinese Crested is usually affectionate, energetic, happy and playful dogs, but can be aloof and nervous at times. They are versatile and have proven successful in their ability to be show dogs and work in obedience and agility.

It is believed the Chinese Crested originates from regions of China around the 13th Century.

It is said, over the centuries, that the Chinese Crested has been used as a rat catcher on ships, to keep Monks warm and eaten as a delicacy.

The Chinese Crested was officially recognised by the UK Kennel Club in 1981.
